NorthLight Lodging Reviews

“What a treat to find such a well-designed and comfortable home on the North Shore! We have been coming to the area for twenty years as renters or homeowners but could never find homes that had a clean, Nordic aesthetic. Well, now we have SweetWater Cottage to relax in and enjoy the Shore, Gunflint Trail, and Grand Mariais.”

— Stephanie

“This cabin is amazing in all the little ways that really matter. We especially loved the kitchen amenities, the fireplace, the deep bathtub for our post-hike and skiing soaks, and the Lake Superior sunsets from the shore. Painted Rock is perfect for both Lutsen and Grand Marais and the hosts are very responsive. 100% recommend it.”

— Tom

— Heather and Chris

“What a wonderful property!! The house was gorgeous and right on the lake! Enough trees between you and neighbors that you feel secluded and can rest and relax to the crashing of the waves on the beach. Can’t speak high enough praise of our experience here! Can’t wait to stay at Cedarwood Hollow again!”

— Katelyn

“We enjoyed another excellent stay at Painted Rock. Cascade Beach Road is the perfect location for enjoying the North Shore! The cabin is well furnished and the owner is doing a good job during the COVID pandemic to ensure cleanliness and check-in/out protocols.”

— Robert

“Cedarwood Hollow offers spectacular views of Lake Superior and amenities galore. On our third night, a thunderstorm passed through. We were awarded breathtaking views from the picture window of lightning directly over the lake throughout the storm. I loved the soaker tubs with hot water on demand after a day of hiking and rock hunting. The kitchen had ample counter space for prepping meals. My daughters and I were able to prep meals in the kitchen without bumping into each other. My granddaughters enjoyed their own private space/cubby up in the loft. This was our first time at Cedarwood but most certainly won’t be our last. We enjoyed every minute of our vacation.”

— Christine

“WOW is about all we can say. The location on the shore is BEAUTIFUL and peaceful. The cabin was immaculately clean and very well appointed. For dining, the Cascade Restaurant is just minutes away — we did outdoor dining and takeout several times. Close proximity to Grand Marais and all the incredible hiking trails along the North Shore. This cabin is a PERFECT place to refresh your soul surrounded by all that is beautiful about the North Shore. We can’t wait to return to Painted Rock.”

— Daniel and Kathy

“Our stay at SweetWater Cottage was everything our family needed! I have never seen such attention to detail. They put a lot of effort into creating a “hygge” type environment. It also had one of the best-stocked kitchens I’ve been to! Our family is already talking about when to book this cabin again for our next gathering.”

— Katie

“WoodSong is beautiful, comfortable, and is in a good location for gazing at Lake Superior and hiking in the North Woods. The bathtubs are great for baths (love the on-demand water heater) and I particularly liked the reclaimed wood ceilings. We had a delightful week-long stay.”

— Mary

“This location was just magical. SweetWater Cottage is luxurious and beautiful. Everything looks brand new, and if you like to cook, the kitchen has everything you need, all spotless. The space is open and inviting, the furniture and blankets are soft and cozy, and the bedrooms are also beautifully appointed with Faribault blankets and beautiful fixtures. The location is also perfection. It is right on the lake, and views look out onto the water, unobstructed. The cabin is also just minutes away from Lutsen for skiing, and 20 minutes from Grand Marais and the wonderful hiking and nature activities this region has to offer. The instructions and host communications were also super clear and helpful, with tips on where to go, how to use everything in the house, and even the history of the region. We will be back for sure. Thank you!”

— Allison

“We had a wonderful time at SweetWater, a newly-renovated home between Lutsen and Cascade River State Park. Located on a fantastic stretch of lakeshore, the house is very comfortable, with great light, a very well done kitchen, comfy bedrooms and baths, and nice privacy. Super lake watching from the house. Hope to return in the summer to enjoy the deck and other outdoor spaces. Our stay couldn’t have been better.”

“Pat Nelson and her four adult daughters — Sherrie, Christie, Debbie, and Pattie — had their first mother-daughter trip here! Pat is 84 and her daughters are finally empty-nesters! What a joy to be together as mother and daughters! Reliving memories, catching up on each other’s lives, and feeling blessed that we can honestly say that we are not only sisters but friends! And, to top it off, we have an 84-years-young mom that we love to spend time with! The cabin was perfect for us and helped us to enjoy our time together! Thank you for keeping the cabin clean, comfortable, and artistically decorated!”

“Top ten reasons the Nelsons love this place: 10) Top-notch lake home — everything is stunning down to the last detail. Felt so at home! 9) Cooking in your gourmet kitchen — fish tacos, homemade pasta, bibimbap and burgers! 8) Fires and walks on the beach — right out the door! 7) Great restaurants — loved the Crooked Spoon and Angry Trout. 6) Golf — Superior National is lovely but we must have lost 20 balls! 5) Hiking — we loved the Oberg Mountain loop and the falls in Grand Portage State Park. Worth the drive up to the Canadian border. 4) Cooking class at the North House Folk School — awesome bread making! 3) Feeling so relaxed and calm — the waves are really something. 2) Countless games of 500 — perhaps with a cocktail or two! 1) Making memories with our family. Thank you so much for sharing this little piece of heaven with us.”

“WoodSong is a gorgeous and cozy retreat. We couldn’t think of a better place to enjoy our first visit to Minnesota! The weather was a bit chilly at night, which set the perfect mood to use the lovely fireplace. The fish house provided us with a lovely spot to witness many shooting stars and the Milky Way. Our entire family has been moved by our visit to this lovely area, and a huge part of this has been due to your lovely home! Looking forward to coming back. P.S. Our trip was made complete by seeing a moose and a bobcat … WOW!”

We can’t wait to come back with family and friends to share this wonderful place!”

— Daniel and Katelyn Washburn

“After a few days further north and further inland — brushing up against the Boundary Waters at Loon Lake — we wrap up our impromptu getaway to the Northwoods at this beautiful cabin. “Cabin” seems almost derogatory in this sense … Cedarwood Hollow is most certainly a cabin, is in its heart a cabin, but is the purest, most honest, most minimalist, best expression of a cabin. Two nights is not nearly enough and though we know we will most certainly be back, we were torn by competing forces with our limited time. On the one hand, hiking — Cascade River Falls and Lookout Mountain; on the other, Grand Marais with its quaint shops, the charming (and delicious) eateries, including Hungry Hippie Tacos and Voyageur Brewing (both vegan-friendly!), the galleries bursting with wonderful local art. Then the third hand — this cabin, which is so homey, so comfortable (and comforting), so peaceful we never wanted to leave. What did we do? All of the above of course! A little bit of everything, a sampling of some of the best there is here, but with full knowledge that we — our souls — are hungry for more. Thank you for crafting such an amazing space capable of creating the fertile soil for leisure, for connection (to each other, to ourselves, to nature), for pampering, for renewal. Time to watch the daylight wind down over the lake, a game (or three) of Scrabble, sleeping with the window cracked open (aaaaah, those waves lapping at the shore), and a last breakfast soaking it all in. Oh, and a fire — of course a fire!”

— Ryan and Megan Kegley

“What a delightful spot! WoodSong was a perfect home base for our family! We spent every night around the firepit stargazing and enjoying the gentle lapping of Superior’s waves. Thank you.”

— The Haugen/Lohnes family

“What a wonderful way to spend a birthday weekend! The cabin is so relaxing and cozy! Thank you! Thank you!”

— Jason and Kerri Rivers

“Our third stay here was just as wonderful as the first! Painted Rock’s special touches inside and out are done so perfectly. We enjoyed lots of biking on the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, hiking the Caribou River and Grand Portage State Park (High Falls), and mornings here, along with many evening campfires. We went to some of our favorite places in Grand Marais and area (Angry Trout, Sydney’s …) and also tried a few new ones — Chik-Wauk Museum at the end of the Gunflint Trail (superbly done!) and Camp 61 for BBQ (excellent!). Our week was lovely but it’s always difficult to leave. We’ll be back!”

— Nancy and Randy

“What a wonderful stay at a wonderful cabin. Thank you for such a beautiful and picturesque venue. We enjoyed the cabin (magazine worthy!) and lake views. Many thanks. We will return again soon.”

— Mark, Barb, Andrea and Lucy

“Ten days went by fast in your beautiful cabin. Thank you for opening this piece of heaven to us. We were lucky enough to spend time here during winter; it was amazing getting the opportunity to experience the beauty during summer. My husband and I were in love the first time we came here, so much we decided to spend our 10th anniversary here. We had an opportunity to do so much in town, did a lot of hiking and had many fires by the rocks! We can’t wait to come again and make new memories. Thank you for all the love you’ve put into this place to make it home away from home.”

— Tirsa Rocheford

— Randy and Monica

“Lake Superior didn’t disappoint. Wonderful waves our first night, calm and restful our second, and a little angry the day we left. The cabin is a joy and the facilities inspiring. Good food, good friends and a great time. We hope to be back … soon!!!”

— The Horaks, the Hauferts and the Grandgenetts

“My best memory — It was a rain-spattered gray day, as it often can be on the North Shore. The gray sky sent sprinkles to the earth and the wind got stronger and stronger. As we strolled — or was it scampered? — from store to store in Grand Marais, we heard the pounding of the surf as it got louder and louder. Together, we went to Artist Point. There, we watched, first from the car, as the waves swept up and over the rocks — the giant rocks on the non-harbor side. Lady Lake showed us her strength as again and again she overcame the rocks and sprayed the watching cars in the parking lot. I felt her strength in wonder and fear. I was mesmerized by her beauty. I was out of the car before I knew it, getting closer and closer to her pounding joy. I stepped up to the temporarily calm place — and waited. Lady Lake obliged me with a wild, passionate and totally wet kiss, shockingly cold and delicious! I laughed in joy and turned, drenched, to return to my wife and friends — and discovered an audience who had crept out of their cars to also watch in wonder and amazement at the beautiful lake and the crazy lady who received the wet kiss. This is just ONE memory from this amazing trip! Thank you for the comfort of your home that was a sweet part of it all.”

— Betsy and Marcia

“Thank you so much for providing such a beautiful waterfront cabin for us. Our second visit here; first time in the fall. Peak color weekend didn’t disappoint, even with a full day of rain on Saturday. Our time is always too short here. We will be back!”

— The Podelsaks and Henslins

“Had a fantastic time! Great hiking — Bean and Bear, Carlton Peak, Oberg, Eagle Mountain and Grand Portage Falls. Great place to come back to for reading, jigsaw puzzles and napping! We couldn’t have asked for better. Plus weather and colors — spectacular!”

— Christie and Jay

“The interior of WoodSong is so cute and cozy! My brother and I loved running around outside and exploring the woods and rocky shores! We enjoyed having fires outside and grilling. When it was raining, we read and played board games. In Grand Marais, we liked skipping rocks while eating delicious food (ice cream, hot chocolate, cookies … nomnomnom). Thx to Misha, Grace, and the Katzenmeiers!”

— Claire

“My wife planned this weekend vacation as a gift for my 35th birthday. Being a Bronx-born, Queens NYC-raised boy, I never thought I would love the outdoorsy life until I met Julie. To make things even more amazing, my older brother, who still resides in Queens, flew out to spend the weekend with us here. They love this place as much as we do. Lake Superior is just beautiful and almost therapeutic to watch and listen to. Hearing my two-year-old son laugh and play with his one-year-old cousin was awesome. First Galicia family vacation in the most amazing cabin I have ever been in. Thank you for allowing my family to experience this little piece of heaven. Definitely my best birthday to date!! P.S. Watching my 18-year-old niece and 15-year-old nephew (who I remember as babies) play with the little ones is also pretty sweet. Hope to be able to stay here in years to come!!!”

— Steve Galicia and family

“What a wonderful treat! Our ballet-girls’ weekend was made complete with this cozy, spacious, magical place. We especially enjoyed the puzzle table — 1,000-piece puzzle completed in less than 24 hours! — the picture windows, cozy/private bedrooms, and the attention to aesthetic detail in every corner. Thank you! As friends of 20 years who grew up dancing ballet together, we even had room to whip out the ballet repertoire! All of the stars, we hope to be back!”

— Krista, Anne, Britta, Sophia and Ashley

“We just LOVED our time at Painted Rock! Big waves, sunrises, and the bathtub were all big hits! We just felt like you’ve thought of everything but kept it simple at the same time. Thank you for sharing your home with us — we will be back!”

“Absolutely LOVED this cabin. Beautiful space, right next to the Lake, very comfortable beds, nice kitchen to cook in, cool stone fireplace, very nice renovation of a log cabin built in the 1930s. Hiked 10 miles/day of the SHT and this place was perfect to come “home” to — shower, cook, sit on the Lake. I’m already planning on booking a week next summer!”

— Mary

“Staying at Cedarwood Hollow was absolutely amazing! The pictures are accurate and this is an incredible location. It is right on the water, with easy access to the shoreline, and the views of the water from the cabin are well thought out to be enjoyable from many rooms. Every detail of our stay was thoughtfully taken care of as well. The cabin is fully stocked with kitchen items, even spices, as well as towels and soaps like a hotel. The location has easy access to Lutsen and Grand Marais and is incredibly close to Cascade Falls for an amazing hike. You should definitely stay here!”

— Daniel

“Just amazing. We booked this place to catch the fall colors and had very high hopes, and it exceeded expectations. So many thoughtful touches in such an incredibly beautiful space. A lot of our weekend was focused around food, and everything in the kitchen was thoughtfully and discreetly labeled. Storage space was perfect, and every amenity we could’ve needed was there. I can’t wait to make this an annual trip. Thanks from the bottom of our hearts!”

— William

“Fantastic family getaway location with easy access for day trips to Lutsen, Grand Marais, Sawbill and Gunflint trails. “Cabin” doesn’t do justice to the smart design details and cozy open floor plan of this welcoming place right on the water. We’re already checking the calendar for next year’s trip.”

— Laura

“Great location for short day trips to North Shore rivers, trails and activities in the Lutsen/Grand Marais area. The cabin was perfect for our family group of 6 adults and 3 children. Nice kitchen and dining area for group meals. Wood burning fireplace and outdoor fire pit had a lot of use with our group with the cool weather we had. The small rock pebble beach in front of the cabin was really nice. Perfect.”

— Phillip

“From start to finish our vacation here was sheer Heaven. The communication was clear and prompt. The property was idyllic — cozy, clean, hip Sundance decor, a beautiful view of the North Shore, and close to amazing hiking spots. And the perfect distance from Grand Marais. We felt entirely at home. We will definitely be back next year.”

— Catie

“The cabin and setting are even better in person. The updating of the cabin and the attention to detail as a host were impressive. We had a front-row seat to stormy waters and could not have been in a better place to take it all in. We highly recommend this place. Thank you!”

— Jeff

“We love Cedarwood Hollow! We were 3 retired couples up for a 3-day stay to hike and bike ride. The home sat right on the water and there were steps down to the beach perfect for walking and rock hunting. The home itself was well designed, decorated, and very comfortable. There was great attention to detail for the lighting and ambiance of the house. The bathrooms (especially the beautiful, large tubs) were exceptional. The fire pit area is also wonderful! We can’t recommend this home enough — it is just lovely! Thank you for our stay!”

— Pam

“An absolutely beautiful cabin in a stunning location. Falling asleep with waves hitting rocks right outside the window is amazing!”

— Eric

“Absolutely a fantastic property to stay at!! Admittedly, we love the North Shore of Minnesota. We have stayed in many locations throughout the years. This by far is the best place we have stayed. It truly captures the feeling of living in a home away from home. The restoration of this cabin is top-notch. It also preserved much of the original intent of the property. The historical ownership and stories that were provided are also very interesting. If you are looking for a truly memorable stay then DO NOT hesitate for any reason to rent this property. The location is unreal!! Right on the lake, with a beautiful and fairly secluded shoreline. Minutes from one of the greatest small towns in the US. There are endless opportunities for activities from this location. We chose to cook in most nights, and it was fantastic for that. Again, don’t hesitate. Thank you for making such a great place available for us to enjoy, rest, relax, and rejuvenate!”

— Mick

“Awesome location, fabulous cabin! I never wanted to leave!! Would highly recommend this place for anyone traveling to the North Shore!”

— Kathy

“This was our 2nd visit and I’m sure there will be more. We love to wake up in the morning and watch the sunrise over Lake Superior. Lots to do in the area as well! Thank you for a wonderful 40th-anniversary experience!”

— Karen

“This is my new favorite cabin. We spent a lot of time out on the rocks looking at the lake. Made fires inside and out. The cabin is so beautifully designed and decorated — totally restful. We will be back!”

— Laura

“We cannot wait for this weekend … we really love your rentals!! I can’t express how much we enjoy our time in the area and it is always filled with wonder & delight. Your homes are always so warm and inviting and relaxing. After a day of hiking, it is so nice to be able to do some home cooking and kick back by the fire. THANK YOU so much … truly a gift you have to share with others!”

— Lavonne

“We are moving in!!! Checked in earlier and you have exceeded all expectations. This is Wendy and me inside and out. Down to the last detail. We have a fire going and are grilling Copper River salmon on cedar planks right now. Looking forward to our next few days at Painted Rock. Thank you for making such a great place and available!!”

— Mick and Wendy

“We couldn’t have been happier with our accommodations … in fact, I thought I might have to let you know that the girls had banded together and were refusing to leave!!!! Seriously, the property is absolutely lovely, the amenities are fabulous, and we truly enjoyed every minute of our stay there. I wish the weather had been a little nicer … overcast most days, rainy for at least one, and Superior showing her angry face most of the time. But several of the group noted that it gave us the excuse to stay inside and enjoy the cabin and the fireplace, and just do the relaxing and catching up that is precisely why we plan these girlfriend getaways! On behalf of myself and the girls in my party, I want to thank you again for providing us with such a beautiful, relaxing, comfortable, FABULOUS place to spend time on the North Shore!!”

— Tracy Fink

“Cedarwood Hollow is extraordinary! An awesome combination of beauty, luxury, and comfort. We felt at home the minute we walked in. We truly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back.”

— Elizabeth

“This is a beautiful property right on the rocky shore of Lake Superior. (We thoroughly enjoyed a couple of days of crashing waves, a result of some windy weather.) The recently renovated ‘cabin’ boasts a gorgeous gourmet kitchen —something our party of 4 took great delight in. The 2 main floor bathrooms were magazine-worthy. The main living area and fireplace were a cozy gathering spot at the end of the day. Views from the oversized windows were spectacular with a couple of sunrises that had us outside trying to capture it all on our cameras. Small details, like labeled light switches and appliance operating instructions, were so appreciated — as were the lovely bath products. The owners obviously take great pride in this well-maintained property. Our thanks for a wonderful fall trip. We look forward to another stay here on the big lake again next year!”

— Jeanette

“Everything about this property was great. So many amazing details that made it so comfortable for our family. It was just what we needed to refresh and relax. Weʼre already talking about next year!”

— Stephanie

“This home on Lake Superior is all-inclusive, state of the art with breathtaking views. The kitchen is fabulous with new appliances and a great stove. Comfortable beds with sleeping arrangements for many. They seem to anticipate the needs of guests before they arrive. The lake was magical and the opportunity to relax and refresh abundant. I would not hesitate to recommend this property and hope to view all seasons from there. A definite must!”

— Patrice

“We have stayed at two of your properties. We have loved both of them, each for individual reasons. Beautiful attention to design … and the location cannot be beaten. Wonderful!”

— Jeanne Strand

“We are so excited to stay again at your beautiful cabin. We were there over Easter and I happened to ask my younger son today what he wanted for Christmas. (I like to start early.) ‘No gifts,’ he just wanted to go back to ‘that special place.’ So to WoodSong we go! I’m actually using the picture we took on Easter at WoodSong for our Christmas card this year. We really love the home and property. It’s just amazing!”

— Lauren

“I have been coming up to the Lutsen area for almost 70 years. This was our favorite place!”

— Lynda

“We all absolutely loved your cabin. Beautiful location. Beautiful cabin. I personally love to remodel and took away some ideas. Your choices to keep the history of the cabin alive but yet modern were spot on! Even my two teenage kids loved it. We’d all be back more often if it weren’t such a long drive :( Thank you so much.”

— Anne

“Love the privacy & lake view, absolutely amazing. Sat in front of the wood burning fireplace for hours.”

— Sean

“We had a lovely time at the cabin, the location is unbeatable and the cabin itself is beyond charming! The amenities are luxurious and the cabin has everything you could need for a fabulous visit. We will certainly consider a return trip!”

— Ashley

“This place left us wanting for nothing. Waves crashing, fire crackling, puzzles connecting while friends enjoyed each other’s company in this fantastic place. The house is gorgeous and we felt spoiled every moment we were here. Thank you so much for sharing your property with us! We will be back!”

— Carrie

“Wow. Just wow. We were so excited to get up here and start our New Year’s getaway, but as everyone has said, our expectations were so far exceeded by the reality of all Painted Rock is. We had an incredible day of skiing at Lutsen and another day of hiking at Cascade Park but each day we could not wait to get back to the cabin. Mornings and evenings by the fire, delicious dinners sitting in front of the window listening to the waves crashing over the rocks, great games of Sorry and Kings in the Corner, and the joy of spending time together away from all the beautiful chaos that life with six kids and 13 (soon to be 15!) grandkids continues to bless us with. We really needed this time together and we are so thankful that you open this beautiful sanctuary to others. We will definitely return!”

— Gary and Kelly

“Thank you for allowing us a piece of heaven here in the North Shore. It was wonderful and cold. It was fantastic seeing the waves outside our window everyday, and imagining how beautiful it would be here during summer. We enjoyed all the activities winter can offer. We played some Monopoly where emotions got high and everyone went broke! If you are reading this, you will enjoy your stay. Everything is perfect and cozy. You will not regret it.”

— Tina

“We spent our holiday weekend as a group of friends up north for an engagement celebration! We embraced the bold north, and hiked amongst the many trails of the area. The best hike involved thigh-high snow, army crawling, and an engagement at the top lookout point! Many laughs, drinks, and many memories were shared this weekend. Cheers to a cozy cabin and many future trips to the North Shore.”

— Emily & Tyler Johnsten

“The Cedarwood cabin has a magic that is difficult to put into words but amazing to experience. HUGE waves greeted us on arrival and then tamed down — we honored the 29 of the E. Fitz — and enjoyed the beauty only the North Shore can offer. Thank you for sharing this oasis with us.”

SCP

“After breaking the record for the snowiest February on record, we decided to take advantage of it and pulled the kids out of school to escape to the North Shore. We are so glad we did!! Loved this little cabin in the woods and the opportunity to unplug (no devices or TV) and reconnect as a family! Enjoyed roaring fires, boards games, dinner at the Crooked Spoon in Grand Marais (order the carrot cake … you won’t be sorry) and great ski conditions at Lutsen! We are packing up to hit the road. So sad to go … but we will be back! Painted Rock truly is a special place. Thank you for sharing it!”

— The Kelly Family

“We really loved this Cedarwood cabin! The cabin is absolutely beautiful with even more beautiful views! It was a perfect place for our little family retreat. Lots of great memories created here!”

— The Paynes

“As I make this entry on our five year wedding anniversary, I reflect on this day, 12/7/13, that I married my love, life, light and friend! We chose to spend our fifth year of marriage in a cabin in the woods (always been a dream). We stumbled upon Painted Rock — it almost lured us to it! The location, the meticulously decorated style, had exactly what we imagined. We drove the 7.5 hours from our hometown with hopes of relaxation and serenity in mind. Upon arrival, we opened the door and immediately were flooded with an intense energy that prompted me to look at my husband and say, ‘I’m never leaving!’ Within the first two of the seven days we spent here, we had intense tranquility, which continued more with each day. It is a place one needs to experience for oneself to capture and FEEL the majestic vibes — rustic charm with top notch amenities! The “off the grid” aspect of no TV in the living room forces reflection and inner peace! We experienced beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The waves crashing against the rocks were a warm lullaby as we drifted to sleep. The fireplace was ever so gloriously romantic. And the tub … talk about connection with your spouse. We were fortunate to see breathtaking night skies filled with sparkling stars. I felt as if God was sprinkling glitter onto us as we watched the shooting stars. I had a ‘tears of love and happiness’ moment wash over me!

We saw a grand ship headed toward Duluth, then another headed toward Canada. We walked and drove Cascade Beach Road and saw numerous deer! We saw four deer, a fox, a ruffed grouse, a few birds, and a sassy pine squirrel that made funny territorial sounds as we walked the yard. We hiked Cascade Park to the falls and from there ventured to Lookout Mountain which was stated as a ‘do not miss’ hike. I am in love with the power and energy that rolls off Lake Superior. What a powerful, gigantic lake. We have decided to make this cabin our annual anniversary trip. We both feel relaxed, rejuvenated and blissful. Have you ever had that feeling of ‘This is it; this is what we want’? Well, we found it here! I truly believe the North Shore has stolen my heart and a piece of it will forever be at Painted Rock. We have already booked for next year! God bless all of you that experience this ‘awakening of the mind’ cabin on the North Shore.”

— Geno and Fawn Perkins

“Another wonderful North Shore weekend thanks to your beautiful place and warm hospitality … Puzzle and game time, glorious skiing conditions and the warmth of good food and a blazing fire. Last night the moon lit up the ice chards on the lake — a spectacular sight and one we’ll never forget. And a doe came to visit while we dined at the corner table! These are memories we will cherish forever.”

— The Robertsons

“You have indeed created a beautiful space for both play and contemplation. Our extended family appreciated all of the touches of love, comfort and relaxed elegance. Teddy (3) & Iris (1 1/2) loved the kids room. Nana and Grandpa loved the round tub and morning views of the sunrise over the lake. Josh hiked the beach each morning and evening. Emily (architect) savored all of the design decisions. Lori and Rof almost finished the Charley Harper puzzle. Nana (Barb) set up the game table with drawing and painting supplies and worked out ideas for new paintings and colored with her sweet budding artists (Iris and Teddy). Oh, and we cooked and feasted with chefs Ben and Joshua. We are so grateful for having had the opportunity to be here and for the gift of this place.”

— The Gosack/Tomlinson/Knosalla Family

“Becky, what can I say. It was the perfect place to re-connect as a couple. We enjoyed all of the special features and blend of historic but modern amenities. Thank you for the specialty soaps, many towels and pillows, detailed directions and all the unique features. We never wanted to leave the cabin or its beautiful spot on the lake, but we took time to enjoy all of the nearby destinations — a hike at Cascade River State Park (scary hiking on the icy trails but we made it!), the Oberg Loop (gorgeous and unexpected), and a few hours at the Artist’s Point — along with drinks and food at Cascade Restaurant and Gunflint Tavern. Thank you for sharing your cabin with others. We were so very sad to leave your beautiful cabin, and we will definitely have to come back again.”

— Kathy

“Our family had a great stay at Painted Rock. Even though it is the snowiest February on record and a school snow day the day before we arrived, we had no trouble getting to the cabin. The road and driveway were freshly plowed, all doorways were cleared and a fire was ready to start in the amazing stone fireplace. We had the cabin toasty in no time. The cabin was sparkling clean, great selection of games and books and lots of warm, wool blankets to curl up in with a cup of hot cocoa. Our family had a great time, skiing at Lutsen, hiking at Gooseberry, exploring Grand Marais and walking along the frozen shore of Lake Superior. No crashing waves this time … except the crashing ice as our kids launched chunks of frozen lake into the air and watched them shatter. We loved our little cabin … it was the perfect blend of rustic and modern. We would like to come back to enjoy this great location in the summer or fall. Thanks for sharing this amazing place.”

— The Kellys

“Absolutely stunning in every way. A little piece of serenity in a hectic world. I have never been to a place so focused on details, expertly laid out, top of the line. Watched the sunrise every morning. Sat by the fire in the evening. Enjoyed a luxurious hot bath after snowshoeing. Wish we could vacation there every weekend. Thank you for your hospitality from the bottom of our hearts ❤️”

— Catherine

“The cabin was fabulous. Every detail was well thought out and we had everything we needed. With the overcast and rainy weather we loved having a wood burning fire. The cabin was very clean when we arrived and the view of the lake was great, we loved hearing the waves as we fell asleep. From beginning to end Becky was very helpful and responded quickly to any questions or requests we had. We would recommend this rental to couples or families. It was just my husband and I getting a long relaxing couples weekend away but would bring our boys back to stay here. Thanks for sharing your home with us.”

— Kristine

“We booked three late November nights at Painted Rock as part of our honeymoon trip up the North Shore. The view of Lake Superior from the cabin is simply incredible, and the crashing waves provide a perfect soundtrack for bedtime (especially on a windy November night). The location is perfect for all kinds of outdoor activities, so there is no shortage of fun to be had. On top of that, the modern amenities are all there (it’s plenty warm). We could not have picked a better setting for our special week. We will definitely be back.”

— Jack

“What a wonderful place! My wife and I and a group of our friends had the opportunity to stay here and couldn’t have asked for a better experience for a long weekend in the North. The pictures on the listing don’t do it justice, it is a gorgeous space throughout, fits in its surroundings perfectly, and is as inviting and warm a place to spend time as one could ask for. Everything about our stay was a breeze and enjoyable. Becky is a wonderful host as well. Her communication with us from booking to checkout was great, all the information left for guests in the cabin was very helpful and left us without question of anything. I highly recommend this place and would jump at the chance of going again.”

— Derek

“This is a very stylish cabin with a great lakeside setting. We loved hanging out on the patio and listening to the waves crash into the shore. The kitchen has everything you need, as does the whole house really. It’s a bit on the pricey side but it’s definitely a step up from an average cabin. So, if you appreciate thoughtful decor and a prime location, this place is for you. The owner was also very responsive and easy to work with. We would highly recommend this property.”

— Dawn

“Amazing long weekend at this beautiful cabin. They did a perfect job of leaving just the right amount of rustic mixed with all of the updates. 3 nights didn’t seem long enough … we definitely want to stay longer next time! Relaxing and rejuvenating.”

— Kelly

“The property is intentionally designed with aesthetic beauty and comfort in mind. We couldn’t have asked for a more Hygge weekend.”

— Brianna

“We loved our stay at WoodSong! The fish house makes it special. We enjoyed morning coffee listening to the gentle lapping of Lake Superior against the rocks in the fish house, then breakfast on the patio accompanied by a bald eagle perched high on one of the many trees on the property. Thoughtfully and stylishly laid out, the cabin is relaxing, immaculately clean, and very well stocked. The bathrooms are beautiful! The cabin is between Lutsen and Grand Marais, many hiking trails very nearby. Close proximity to the Gunflint trail, worth a drive down. The owners are extremely helpful and welcoming. Will definitely be back!”

— Gillian

“This is a wonderful place. We have never stayed so close to the water. The cabin is warm and inviting. We had a fire every night and just relaxed. We can’t wait to come back.”

— Ryan

“The house is beautifully designed with a spectacular location — better than the photos. It was an amazing venue for our family get-together (three families with two little ones). We snowshoed at the state parks and walked the beach, coming back to the house for big family dinners and evenings around the fire. Truly perfect. The location is easy striking distance to so much — trails, scenery, and exploring Grand Marais. Highly recommended!”

— Emily

“WoodSong exceeded our expectations — a beautifully and thoughtfully designed cabin with attention to detail as well as comfort! Next to Lake Superior with a spectacular view and an extensive rocky shore to explore as well, we appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at WoodSong.”

— Mary

“We had a wonderful time over a 3-day weekend in December 2018. The property is charming, well laid out, with a nicely appointed kitchen, living room & bath with many thoughtful touches throughout. Including lovely bath soaps, shampoo, conditioner & lotions supplied for the guests use. We loved to spend time out on the deck & on the rocks along the shoreline watching the waves, sunrises, sunsets & the beautiful night sky. A hidden surprise for you to discover is the “Ent” in the yard. We will definitely return!”

— Robert

“Painted Rock is even better in person than the pictures. It’s beautiful in the pictures but gets better! It’s clean and stylish. Everything you need is there. Location is great. Peaceful. Quiet.”

— Anne

“Everything related to the rental of this home was thought of by the owner. Not to mention the quality of amenities for a VRBO … feels a lot like everything I would want stocked if I lived there — and that’s often hard to find when renting for a weekend. No doubt, for these reasons, the view, the location, the parking, the space, the everything — we’ll be back!”

— Wendy

“We can’t say enough about the beauty, serenity and charm of WoodSong! Thank you so much Becky & Kail, for sharing it with us.”

— Kerrie

“This cabin is the quintessential north woods cabin. The natural beauty of the location in combination with the beauty of the cabin itself makes for a wonderful stay. We couldn’t recommend this cabin anymore! Perfect spot for a honeymoon!”

— Andrew

“Words cannot describe this calming, clean, beautifully decorated cabin. Our family had such a great experience here. We had bonfires every night, walks on the beach multiple times a day, and the little ones loved tossing rocks in the water. Every detail was thought of and we greatly appreciated the welcome letter as well as all of the little kid-friendly corners of the cabin. We will definitely be back!”

— Julie

“A beautiful and quality place with such thoughtful touches. Perfect location to experience the North Shore but it was hard to want to leave the cabin. I can’t wait to go back!”

— Nicole

“What a wonderful place! My wife and I loved the modern amenities while still keeping the rustic cabin charm. Just amazing! Right on the water. We’ve been coming to the North Shore for 15+ years. We’ve never slept that close to the water before. So cool. Make sure you have breakfast at the Cascade Restaurant just a little ways away. Wonderful food. We loved our stay, and look forward to coming again!”

— Dan

“Amazing view of Lake Superior — to be any closer to the water is impossible. The cabin is gorgeous with high end features including the stove, light fixtures, towels … The wood burning fireplace made it so cozy. Two large unique tub/showers were a surprise. You will not be disappointed with Cedarwood Cabin.”

— Jennifer

“A fantastic stay at WoodSong. Stayed for my wife’s 30th birthday weekend and it was the perfect cabin for the family! Ideal location for quick access to several state parks, activities in town and Lutsen. Loved the lakeside fishing hut for evening happy hour (brought our own fold-up table to setup apps and drinks)! What surprised us most about the cabin is the attention to detail. For a rental it had incredible quality; from the ambient lighting and comfortable Restoration Hardware furniture through-out the cabin, to the All-Clad cookware and EO bath products. We know other vacationers are sure to appreciate this property and the care put into it too and are glad to have found this new rental.”

— Mitch

“Everything is perfect. The location, the space, the thoughtful touches. We would have stayed forever if we could. Conveniently set directly between Lutsen and Grand Marais, with a very private and quiet beach on Lake Superior. The amenities are outstanding and it was sparkling clean when we arrived. Thank you so much, Becky. We will never forget our experience here, and will plan to come back ASAP!!!”

— Laura

“This cabin was so charming and breath-taking! It’s decorated so tastefully and highlights the beauty of the area. The large picture windows facing the lake really let you enjoy the surrounding natural beauty, and the amenities like the large bathtubs and cozy fireplace were perfect for our family getaway! We will recommend this place and to anyone visiting the north shore! I would love to stay in all of Becky’s properties! Her hospitality is definitely the gold standard! Thank you so much for such a memorable and accommodating stay!”

— Kristina

“Your expectations will be exceeded when you stay in this gem called WoodSong. Every sunrise brings with it the memories you will make that day. Nothing is more like the ocean than Lake Superior; its waves thundering into the rocks on the beach. A beautiful, relaxing respite for you if you seek the peace and tranquility that comes with spending time with those you love sitting in front of the warmth of the grand fireplace reading and talking while escaping the stresses of your real life!”

— Terrie

“Me and my wife really enjoyed our stay at this fantastic property right on Lake Superior. The cabin itself has every modern amenity you could ask for and still maintains the cozy, quaint atmosphere you would want in a lake cabin. The location provides close proximity to Grand Marais and all local activities including restaurants, hiking, art galleries, etc. It is also a great place to just settle in and read, nap or enjoy the lake views. We cannot say enough good things about this property and hope to return many times.”

— Jay

“Our family & friends had such a lovely time at Cedarwood. The location is perfect, halfway between Lutsen & Grand Marais and right on the shore of Lake Superior. The sound of the waves was recorded many times so that we could take a small piece of the experience home! The cottage remodel is stunning. Every detail is thoughtful and well executed. We really only needed clothes & food … everything else was there! The owners are very responsive. It is a magical place! We’ll be returning.”

— Kim

“Having relatives in northern Minnesota I have traveled and stayed in this area many times. This is by far the BEST place we have ever been to. Becky is wonderful to work with. The cabin is beautiful! We can’t wait to stay here again.”

— Kristin

“The photos don’t do it justice. This place is over the top spectacular! We arrived early March to xx ski. Great location you can walk to trails. Cabin was so delightful warm and cozy we decided to skip the skiing and enjoy the views of the lake sipping cognac by the beautiful stone fireplace. Sunrise was a knockout. We can’t wait to come back.”

— Amy

“Perfect for a weekend getaway. The house is beautiful and the views are amazing. Everything was well organized and clean! So cozy and warm on a cold winter weekend. We all had an amazing time and would definitely stay again!”

— McKayla

“This place is truly amazing. When you step inside the cabin you instantly feel like you are home. We will definitely be coming back to WoodSong in the future!”

— Tyler

“The log cabin had all a person would want, the authenticity of chinked logs, wooden floors, massive fireplace, with modern amenities. What a view! Right on the water, large deck, shoreline fire ring, Adirondacks, loons, it was picturesque tranquility at its finest. We introduced our Chicago based 26 year old daughter to the North Shore with our stay here, weather was unusually warm, and Painted Rock was a hit all around, she is still raving about the bathroom! We will be back — thank you for sharing.”

— Chris, Peg and Tess

“We were looking for a place right on the lake with an outdoor fire pit to get away for a couple days. We have had a rough few months and needed a quiet, peaceful place to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. The pictures online looked just perfect and the place definitely did NOT disappoint! The home is warm and welcoming and filled with high quality items to make your stay comfortable. The location couldn’t be any closer to the lake and while you know there are homes on either side, you feel very secluded. Perfect relaxing getaway! Thank you for sharing this wonderful place with us.”

— Stacy

“I cannot stop talking about how great this cabin was to visit. There was a luxurious comfort that filled a need for both simplicity and pampering. Outside was subzero temps which made the lake fascinating and we stayed toasty warm inside. It was a great location to Grand Marais and many nearby outdoor activities. Becky was incredibly responsive and thoughtful. We cannot wait to return.”

— M

“The cabin is beautifully restored, situated right on Lake Superior. The shore is just a few steps from the back door. The kitchen is very nice, with beautiful appliances, and fully stocked with all the pots and pans, dishes, utensils, etc., needed to make dinner, lunch, or breakfast. The main living area has a beautiful cozy fireplace, dining table, game table and sofa and chair, and it is decorated very nicely (cozy)! It is obvious that the owners put their hearts and souls into this place. We hope to go back someday!”

— Kristina

“Cedarwood checked all our boxes, Lake Superior right out the backdoor, a cobblestone beach, plenty of room for 8 and an awesome fireplace and fire pit. We, seven of my co-worker/girl friends could not have had a better place to stay for our girls long weekend on Lake Superior. The cabin/house is tastefully decorated with a minimalist approach and re-purposed décor/features. Lake Superior is right out the back door and the views from large unobstructed windows within the cabin are amazing. Each night we enjoyed listening to the waves lapping on the cobblestone beach in front of the cabin, very soothing and relaxing. Time was spent scavenging the beach for drift wood and rocks. On Monday the weather was so nice we enjoyed our morning coffee out at the fire ring sitting in the comfy Adirondack chairs, then in the evening had a fire and watched the sky change colors as the sunset.

The kitchen is quite large and well appointed with an awesome gas range to cook on, which made preparing a meal for 8 of us easy. We could have a least 4-5 people in the kitchen without running into each other.

Loved the fact that Cascade State Park was close by, went on a hike along the Cascade River. We did have a rainy day which afforded us to do shopping and lunch in Grand Marais.

As for the owner of the property, Becky has been very attentive and prompt with emails and returning phone calls. She is easy to work with and makes you feel like you are her most important guest. We have made some special memories at Cedarwood, and hope to come back to this property again in the future. We loved, loved, loved it!”

— Nancy

“Painted Rock is the perfect North Shore Experience. For anyone looking for solitude, beauty and serenity in Northern Minnesota this is your place. The cabin is charming, the views spectacular and the hospitality of our hosts beyond compare.”

— David

“Can’t say enough about how awesome the Painted Rock cabin was. We really felt like we were staying in something special. The location is perfect … not far from Cascade River State Park, Lutsen and Grand Marais. It had a boundary waters feel, but with all the access to the north shore parks. We ended up eating in each night as the kitchen was fun to cook in … and the little table by the window served as the perfect dining spot. We were lucky to have a full moon for our stay … which added to the ambiance. Design of the cabin was obviously given a a lot of thought. You can feel the passion of the owners for what they do (restoring cabins being one of them) when staying at Painted Rock. Only complaint we have is that we were not there longer!”

— Sam

“We stayed three nights in this beautiful cabin and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect location!! The cabin was warm and inviting and had everything we needed and more!! That kitchen!! We cooked and ate all our meals in the cabin — no reason to leave!! The beds were very comfortable with fine quality linens and pillows. The first night the lake was quite active so we were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach — just what we were hoping for! We made good use of the fireplace and spent many hours visiting and enjoying the breathtaking view of the lake from those windows on the main floor! We couldn’t have been more pleased with our stay! Thank you, Becky, for sharing your little piece of heaven with us!! We can’t wait to return!”

— Karen

“The cabin and location are even more beautiful than the photos show. The home is right on the shore of Lake Superior, with a perfect rocky beach to sit, make a fire, and watch the waves. The cabin restoration was beautifully done down to the smallest details, including great appliances, linens, and a heated bathroom floor. Check-in was easy and instructions were clearly communicated. We will absolutely stay here again and are already looking forward to it!”

— Sarah

“Minnesota’s north shore is second to none. If you are looking to disconnect from the world this is the place to do it. The cabin has that familiar smokey smell and is very welcoming. The waves can easily be heard and put us to sleep each night. We moved the chairs down by the rocks where we had our morning coffee and sunset campfires. It was hard to leave this serene place when our week was over. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an escape from a hectic life.”

— Luther

“This cabin and really the entire area is just what we needed for a family get away. If you haven’t been this far up the north shore, do it. Just do it. We were fortunate enough to be guests during a great early season storm so the wave action was impressive and the lake was active. The cabin is everything that is promised in the literature, we really did not find a weak point. The amenities are well thought out and high end while still maintaining comfort and casualness. Becky was great to work with and communication was great. If there is a regret, is that we haven’t been there before and we weren’t able to stay longer.”

— Dave

“A beautiful, well-appointed little cabin in an absolutely gorgeous spot right on Lake Superior. It’s not your ordinary rustic cabin; everything inside is first-rate. We really enjoyed watching the hummingbirds and listening to the whoosh of the waves at night. Our host was responsive and caring.”

— Judith

“The ambience of this well preserved and furnished log cabin is truly outstanding. All of the historical integrity remains, while high end and tasteful furnishings provide 21st century comforts. The rocky shore provides easy access to observe the ever changing and mysterious Lake Superior, it is just minutes away from the charming town of Grand Marais, and it is situated on a gravel road which provides a safe place to run or walk and take in the smell of the balsams. This place has it all. We’ve stayed here twice and enjoyed every aspect of it.”

— Joel and Jeanne

“Our family shared so much quality time at this special cabin. The views were breathtaking and you can spend hours right outside your door looking at beautiful rocks on the beach. One day as we were sitting on the shore, an eagle flew right overhead. We had fires, played board games, did puzzles and just slowed down and enjoyed our family in this special place. The beds are super cozy too! This is a fantastic space!”

— Julie

“Painted Rock is just what you need if you are looking to reconnect with Mother Nature. Lake Superior is right outside the door just a few steps away. A small fire on the rocks, listening to the water and sitting in the glow of the moon is a gift that you don’t want to miss. The cabin is located in a very central location so that an hour drive in either direction along the coast will take you to any waterfall, hike, town or sight that you would wish to see. Grand Marais, a picturesque but understated town with a nice art community, creative local restaurants and a brewpub, is less than a 10 minute drive down the road. The cabin itself is clean and well-equipped for an intimate getaway or for a family vacation. It’s fully set up for home cooking is you prefer to be a homebody, too. The care and love of the owners is obvious is all the details of the cabin. If you are looking to treat yourself or your family to a nice getaway on Lake Superior’s coast, be sure to check out Painted Rock.”

— Rebecca

“The cabin is so perfectly appointed — every detail considered. Cozy, convenient and casually luxurious. The personal touches went a long way in making treasured memories. My 13-year-old took his bird feeding duties very seriously! The setting is idyllic — private, quiet with gorgeous views, conveniently located to restaurants and activities. Becky was so warm and informative, even extending additional contacts to for us to secure fun activities. While brief, this was one of our best vacations, ever. We will never forget Painted Rock.”

— Lynne

“We spent a week at the Cedarwood Cottage and could not have asked for a more wonderful place to stay! The owners have thought of everything to make your stay in this beautiful cottage comfortable. My family has stayed in many VRBOs and this was one of the best. It was everything stated in the description by the owners. In addition to the comforts of the cottage, the owners provided great information about the area including great hikes and places to eat.”

— Becky

“This cabin is amaaaaazing! The kitchen is up to date and gorgeous and it even includes a dishwasher, the rest of the cabin is just as wonderful. Stone fireplace, leather furniture, heated floor in bathroom and Lake Superior constantly crashing softly against the shore mere steps from the deck. We saw deer, hawks, bald eagles and more. The cabin is thoughtfully stocked with towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, firewood, utensils and tons of dishes/pots and pans. Oh btw the wifi signal is fantastic. You could easily take a working vacation here if you so chose. There are tons of places around the cabin both within walking or driving distance to shop and eat at. There’s also waterfalls within hiking distance. I can’t recommend this cabin and Becky as a host more!”

“This was a return visit in the winters months. The Painted Rock cabin provides an outstanding getaway experience. The amenities are first rate and and provide a comfortable blend of luxury and a rustic cabin experience. The setting and views throughout the day and night are awesome! Fabulous place to go and return!”

“My husband and I loved staying at this luxurious cabin. We stayed here for a couple nights during our honeymoon, hoping to find a place to get away from it all. And we definitely found it. Becky and Kail clearly thought of everything when updating and decorating this space, from cozy couches with beautiful blankets to an amazing bathtub perfect for relaxing. The cabin is also an easy distance away from Grand Marais, the largest town in the area so getting gas and groceries was simple and we could also find great restaurants when we didn’t want to cook.”

“Painted Rock is cozy, comfy and absolutely charming. It looks rustic but feels anything but! And it’s situated at the water’s edge — we could hear the waves right outside while we slept. It is the perfect getaway — my family and I loved staying here. We will definitely be back.”

“The cabin is amazing. It’s clear that a lots of time, care, and attention were put into all of the details in the cabin. The heated floors in the bathroom are a nice touch. Becky has thought through anything and everything that could be wanted/needed by a traveler and it’s almost all provided: logs for the fire, a sound system with aux cord, fresh towels, and instruction on how to use anything in the cabin are just to name a few. The views of Lake Superior are stunning and the quiet, tucked away location is a gem. The location of the cabin is only minutes from local hiking trails that offer more northern Minnesota scenery. This is a truly unique and incredible space to get together with family and friends.”

“I retreat to the North Shore year after year to write. When I discovered Painted Rock, it was like something out of a movie set. A quintessential Northwoods cabin that hugs a rocky shoreline buffeted by waves. Halfway between Lutsen and Grand Marais and right on the edge of picturesque Cascade State Park, the cabin is perfectly situated for hiking, skiing or shopping, or enjoying one of the many restaurants in the area. The owners have a careful eye for high-end details — tufted leather sofa that looks right out of a Pottery Barn catalog, a Miele refrigerator/freezer in the kitchen, a giant soaker tub in the bathroom, and Edison bulbs in interesting light fixtures throughout. Beyond the surprisingly luxurious interior in an otherwise unassuming log cabin, Becky has been terrific to work with on reservations and when the gas ran out in the heater, Patrick, who helps to maintain it, came right over and got a fire going just in time for the first snowfall of the season. Gas arrived a few hours later and I never had to worry about a thing. THEY put Painted Rock in a class all its own and have made me stay and return three times in just over a year. Can’t wait to return!”

“This rustic, completely updated log cabin was the perfect place to stay on our fall trip to the North Shore. Every detail has been carefully planned, from the cabin restoration to the modern fixtures and appliances, everything was perfect. It’s not too often you even see high quality matching silverware in a rental cabin. The only thing we needed to bring was food. The best meal of the stay was the steak and baked potato made on the equally nice Weber grill one night. The cabin sits right on Lake Superior and is just minutes from Lutsen, Grand Marais and all kinds of recreational activities. This trip was devoted primarily to hiking and fall color excursions. The chilly nights were welcome as we used the fireplace and lakeside fire pit most nights. Becky was great to work with from beginning to end. We will definitely be back in the future for another stay.”

“We spent a wonderful week in the early fall staying this lovely cabin. We loved its private, quiet location on Lake Superior almost as much as its close proximity to great hiking, historic sites, and the restaurants, brewpubs, and shops of Grand Marais. The cabin is impeccably and very thoughtfully furnished, perfectly blending rustic with modern. The attention to every small detail (down to the heated bathroom floor, the classic board game collection, regional artwork, and perfectly outfitted kitchen) was greatly appreciated. The access to the lake was fantastic; we loved watching both the sunrises and sunsets from the Adirondack chairs and the fire pit on the painted rocks. We look forward to a return visit!!”

“Driving out of 100 degree Kansas heat to Painted Rock Cabin in Lutsen, Minnesota, was quite a treat. Not only was the weather a huge improvement, Painted Rock turned out to be the nicest cabin we have ever stayed in. I remember in times past that cabins we would rent would be filled with mismatched kitchen equipment to linens to furniture. Not so at Painted Rock where every detail seems to have been carefully thought out from the small but lovely kitchen not only well equipped but beautifully appointed to the rustic native stone fireplace and comfortable and tasteful furnishings throughout. What we enjoyed most was sitting on the deck or in the Adirondack chairs with a good book listening to the lapping water on the shoreline rocks of Lake Superior only a few feet away. Our few days of retreat there were treasured time thanks not only to the beauty of the surroundings but also to the comfort and charm of Painted Rock. We do so look forward to going again.”

“I have stayed at many VRBOs over the years, as it is our favorite way to travel. I can say, without hesitation, that Painted Rock is among the very best! Becky has hospitality down to a science. The cabin is impeccably appointed with everything you need to relax and enjoy your stay. High end furnishings, decor and linens provide both comfort and luxury. And to make things even better, it is situated in a private location with stunning views out nearly every window. Lake Superior is right outside the cabin. We spent hours, sitting on the rocks and watching the waves crash at our feet. I’ll also add that the cabin had the highest standard of cleanliness. It would pass any white glove test with flying colors. My husband and I rarely visit the same VRBO location twice, but if we ever had a chance to return to Painted Rock, we would in a heartbeat. My highest recommendation!!”

“This was my first trip to the North Shore. It was much more than what I expected. The area is absolutely breathtaking. I call it a combination of the rugged, rocky coast of Maine with the feel of being in the mountains of Colorado. The cabin at Painted Rock was the perfect setting in every way from the quaint feel to the amazing views. This cabin is so cool and comfortable that you can’t help but open a good bottle of wine. Thanks for an amazing and memorable experience.”

“Every moment of our time spent at Painted Rock was just perfect — right down to each tiny detail. The view is incredible! The hum of the lake and the gorgeous trees surrounding the cabin made us feel like we were in our own little spot in the world created just for us. Our time there was a time of refreshing, connection and peace.

But there was lots of fun to be had too! From shopping downtown, visiting the new brewery and trying out all the unique restaurants to hiking by the water and the rivers it was just a wonderful time!

We would certainly recommend this place for anyway wanting an adventure away – a getaway you’ll never forget. We loved it and can’t wait to go back!”

“My time at Painted Rock Cabin was very special, and I can’t imagine it being better. I stayed with a good friend, and we enjoyed hiking near the cabin along the Temeperance River and Cascade Falls. There are great restaurants nearby in Lutsen and Grand Marais. And although it was late the trees were still beautiful and a lot of color could be seen. The cabin is beautifully appointed with everything you would want for a stay on the North Shore. The cabin is so comfortable and well designed that it’s tempting to stay inside all day, sleeping late in the cozy beds, sitting by the fire and looking at the lake out the windows. Or cooking a delicious meal in the luxurious kitchen. But the outdoors beckon and the deck of the cabin offers spectacular and secluded views of Lake Superior. A great place to watch the waves and the occasional bald eagle. I would highly recommend this cabin to anyone considering a stay in this area. You won’t be disappointed.”
